The National Farmers Day Celebration is celebrated on the first Friday of December each year to reward and recognize the contributions of farmers in the country.
The Kwadaso Municipal Assembly like other Assembly in Ghana also celebrated this year’s farmers ’day with a ground durbar as more than 100 farmers exhibited some of their farm produce at the event.
This year farmers ’day celebration for the Kwadaso Municipal Assembly was held on Friday, December 2, 2022 at the Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skill Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED) with the theme “Accelerating Agriculture Development Through Value Addition”
This year marks the 4th edition of the Farmers Day Celebration for the Kwadaso Municipal Assembly since its creation in 2018. It is also the 38th edition for Ghana since it was instituted in 1985.
Welcoming the people to the ceremony, Mrs. Mavis Agyeiwaa Yeboah, the Municipal Agric Director, urged the people to take farming seriously just like any other profession. She advised the farmers to resort to the use of organic fertilizers for improved yields.
She mentioned that, the toils in farming comes with great dividends if farmers apply modern Agriculture practices been embarked upon by the Agric Department.
Mrs. Yeboah assured the farmers that, her outfit will continue to support them in improving their yields.
The Municipal Chief Executive, Hon Richmond Agyenim- Boateng in his speech thanked all the farmers in the Municipality for continuously producing food for the Municipality and beyond and urged them not to relent on their efforts.
The MCE said, government policies such as Planting for food and Jobs, Fertilizer subsidy among others are all to support farmers improve their yields and better their living conditions.
He congratulated all the award winners for their dedication and hard work.
The Member of Parliament for Kwadaso, Hon. Dr. Kingsley Nyarko was full of praise for the farmers.
He highlighted the need for government and the Municipal Assembly to support farmers in the Municipality and the country as a whole.
He explained that, the NPP government flagship programme 1D1F is to help reduce the US 10 Billion that is used to import all kinds of foodstuffs into the country annually.
Dr. Nyarko said adding value to our agricultural produce, was the surest way to improve their living conditions.
The MP personally donated an amount of One Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH₵ 1000.00), Five Hundred Ghana Cedis (GH₵ 500.00) and another Five Hundred Ghana Cedis (GH₵ 500.00) to the overall best farmer, best female farmer and the best physically challenged farmer respectively.
The Vice Chancellor of AAMUSTED, Prof. Frederick Kwaku Sarfo, who chaired the event said, this year’s theme “Accelerating Agricultural Development Through Value Addition” was befitting as it calls for adding value to the raw agricultural produce to make them more valuable and also last longer.
He appealed to farmers to fully embrace the idea of value addition to farm produce to make farming a more lucrative and profit oriented venture.
Mr. Ferdinard Obeng Agyemang was adjudged the overall Best Farmer in the Municipality. He has 10 acres of farm which is made up of Cassava farm, Grass cutter rearing, Rabbit, Fish Farming and poultry.
For his prize, he received a certificate, a fridge, mattress, wellington boots, cutlasses, Knapsack sprayer and other Agro-Chemical products.
Other consolation prizes were, Best physically challenged farmer, Best livestock farmer, Best poultry farmer, Best crop farmer, Best agric extension officer, Best female farmer among others.
Some of the dignitaries who graced the occasion include, Hon. Dr. Kingsley Nyarko, member of Parliament for Kwadaso Constituency Hon. Richmond Agyenim Boateng, MCE for Kwadaso Municipal Assembly, Professor Frederick Kwaku Sarfo, Vice Chancellor for AAMUSTED, Mr. Emmanuel Ntoso, Municipal Co-ordinating Director, Mrs. Mavis Agyeiwaa Yeboah, Municipal Agric Director and Mr. Samuel Kwaku Gyasi, Presiding Member of the Assembly. Traditional Leaders within the Municipality, the Clergy, Hon. Assembly Members, Heads of Department, Unit Committee members, Staff of the Assembly, Farmers and some residents were also present at the event.
